Port Elizabeth
Port Elizabeth, Gateway to the Eastern Cape, is the perfect complement
to the Garden Route, Settler Hinterland and Sunshine Coast. Located on
the South Eastern coast of Africa, this major seaport and tourist
destination is set along the dazzling shores of Algoa Bay, and is
fondly referred to as the Friendly City. Nelson Mandela Bay,
incorporating Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and Despatch, is a city big on
surprises and has an unbeatable mix of holiday sensations.
As a family and adventure holiday destination, the city offers an
unbeatable and diverse mix of eco-attractions: scenic nature trails
and magnificent wildlife, long golden beaches, a rich historic heritage
and a unique coastal climate. Port Elizabeth is truly an ideal place to
holiday, and those who take the time to discover Port Elizabeth's
treasures soon encounter the genuine hospitality for which the city is
famous.
Discover South Africa's most beautiful beaches. Get wet and wild on
the water sport scene or simply get lazy. Peep into bygone days of old
rail junctions like Alicedale. Ride a steam train. Hike an eco-trail.
Surf with the dolphins. View the big five just half an hour from Nelson
Mandela Bay. Dine out. And meet the locals over sundowners at festive
beachfront pubs.
Kenton on Sea
Kenton on Sea is a beautiful seaside town offering accommodation in
B&B's, chalets, hotels and guesthouses. Tourists are encouraged to
try the local eco tourism and sports activities, which include golf,
fishing, cycling, whale watching and game reserves.
Port Alfred
Port Alfred is set about halfway between Durban and Cape Town. It has
a temperate climate which avoids the tropical humidity to the east and
the cold wet winters of the west; instead it offers halycon summers and
winters of golden days and crisp nights.
The locals favour the months of March to July in Port Alfred due to
the mild winters. Steeped in history, Port Alfred is a popular departure
point for serious researchers who, along with more casual explorers, are
rewarded by many quaint places of interest in town and countryside, all
signposts to the rich and varied history of the region.
The Kowie History Museum and the Bathurst Agricultural Museum are
excellent starting points. Along the banks of the Kowie River and the
surrounding countryside the original settlers met the local Xhosa
people.
Tsitsikama
Some say Tsitsikama is the most beautiful region of South Africa
and it surely is full of wonderful surprises - rugged coastlines
with white sandy beaches and coves, tranquil lakes, rivers and
lagoons, forests with 800-year-old Yellowwoods and peaceful villages
and towns.
Stretching from Still Bay in the west to the rugged Tsitsikama
coast beyond Plettenberg Bay, and enclosed by the Langeberg,
Outeniqua and Tsitsikama (pronounced sit-see-karma) Mountains,
this is the only area in South Africa that enjoys all year rainfall.
Access is easy, with flights to George airport from all main cities.
Some travellers prefer to fly in to Port Elizabeth and drive through
the Garden Route to Cape Town, enabling a visit to the Addo Elephant
Park, and Alicedale outside Port Elizabeth.
A toll road between Port Elizabeth and Plettenberg Bay bypasses some
places that warrant exploration, so if driving by car, then choose the
old, winding coastal road through forests and along the sea shore.
Places like Storms River Mouth are well worth visiting.
St Francis Bay
St Francis Bay is situated 90 km west of Port Elizabeth. It is a
holiday town situated alongside the Indian Ocean. 50 % of the town
is constructed in and around the largest man made web of canals and
waterways in Africa. The area is known for its long safe sandy beaches,
good surfing and rock fishing, pleasant walks and quiet lifestyle. The
weather is temperate with warm, sunny and dry summers.
